Abstract

In a moulding machine in which a flask 8 contains moulding sand that is compacted between a fixed thrust plate 9 and a pattern plate 3 carrying patterns 4, the pattern plate 3 and a stripper plate 1 are mounted for independent movement on piston 5 and piston 2 respectively, the strokes of the pistons being arranged so that at the end of the stroke of the piston 2 a set of adjustable power cylinders 6 carried by the stripper plate 1 engage with the pattern plate 3 to move the stripper plate and pattern plate simultaneously to the end of their strokes. On retraction the patterns are initially retracted through the stationary stripper plate before the pattern plate and stripper plate are lowered together. On the compacting stroke the pattern plate 3 may be moved upwards first and then the stripper plate follows, or they may both move together but at different speeds, in both cases the pattern plate is stopped before the end of its complete stroke and is caught up and finally moved by the stripper plate. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) a sand frame (13) is placed on top of the flask 8 and the stroke of the stripper plate 3 moves the flask 8 and the sand frame (13) relative to the thrust plate 9 to compress the sand from the top, as well as from the bottom by the patterns 4. When the mould includes projections the sand in the complimentary cavities in the patterns 4 is compacted by providing movable insertion pieces (14), (Figs. 5-7, not shown). The insertion pieces are spring-biased in the pattern 4 and are pre-set, or moved relative to the pattern 4 during movement of the pattern plate 3, to increase the cavity size and during the final part of the stroke of the stripper plate 1 the insertion pieces 14 are forced upwards to compact the sand. A number of examples of operations of the machine are described.
