Abstract

1,179,724. Brush and container combinations. M. MELOCCHI. 3 Feb., 1967 [4 Feb., 1966], No. 5380/67. Heading A4K. [Also in Divisions A5 and B4] An applicator for fluid cosmetics incorporating a brush member which is insertable in a bottle or fluid reservoir comprises a hollow outer tube 31, on inner member 7 which is attached at one end to one end of the tube, the other end of the inner member carrying the brush 28, an intermediate sleeve 32 concentrically positioned and axially slidable in the inner member, resilient means such as a spring 35 biassing the intermediate sleeve towards the brush carrying end of the inner member and co-operating stop means on the inner member and the sleeve to limit the movement of the sleeve towards the brush. In use the inner member with the brush is inserted into the tapered neck 4 of the bottle 1, the sleeve subsequently being moved telescopically back into the outer tube 31 against the spring 35 so that only the brush and inner member are immersed in the fluid. Upon retraction of the brush the sleeve is moved by the spring to cover the inner member. The sliding action of the sleeve along the inner member serves to protect the fingers of the user from contact with any fluid which may remain on the inner member after the insertion of the inner member and brush in the bottle. Within the bottle means are provided to wipe the surface of the inner member, to smooth the brush and to remove surplus fluid from the brush as the latter is withdrawn from the bottle. The means includes a helically grooved resilient member 12 which may be of one piece or formed from a stack of washers located in the portion 8 of the bottle member together with a rubber member 21 positioned axially of the member 12 which is formed with two conical ports 25 and 26 separated by a partition 23 and having a central hole for the passage of the brush and member 7. The applicator and bottle may be connected by threaded portions to form a cylindrical unit.
