Type-case machines; rebound preventing.- A selective printer comprising a plurality of type holders 120, 121 . . . 138, 139, Fig. 5, advanced along a guide path in a case 171, 185 past a plurality of hammers 141, 142..., is provided with magnetic guides 162, 163, Fig. 6, backed by magnetically permeable members 166, 167 which are sandwiched between a permanent magnet 165 to guide the type holders in sliding contact with the guides 162 163 past the hammers, the magnetic field forcing the type holders against the guide 162, whereby rebound is prevented. Dust excluders.-Plates 170, 171, Fig. 6, abutting the guide 163, member 167 and guide 162, member 166, respectively, and overlapping guide surfaces 183A, 182A of the type holders serve as dust excluders. Type-band machines.-In another embodiment type holders 112, Fig. 13, attached to an endless magnetically permeable band 113 are advanced between lateral guides 114A, 114B and the band 113 is guided by a magnet or magnetized guide member 117. Machines with types strung on rods; poweroperated type actions.-In a further embodiment the plurality of type holders 20 . . . 34, Fig. 1, is strung on a rod 43 and the guides are formed magnetically permeable members 39, 40 spaced from one another by a non-magnetic member 41 and interconnected by a permanent magnet 44 (Fig. 3). In a still further embodiment the permanent magnet 44 is replaced by an annular segment magnet 109, Fig. 12, which is also used to pivot the type holders 106 from a position A to a position B to present one or the other of the type faces to the hammers. The type holders 20 . . . mounted on the rod 43 are advanced past the hammers by a yoke 52 slidable in guides 53, 54 and actuated by a crank rod 56 articulated to an endless chain 58 trained over gears 59, 63, the former of which is driven by a motor 64 through gears 61, 62. Alignment for impression.-The type holders 20..., Fig. 1, are aligned in front of the respective hammers 71 . . . 90 by a synchronizing bar fast with an arm 55 on the yoke 52 and provided with synchronizing marks which are read by a photo-electric or magnetic reader 101. Types, dies and printing surfaces.-The type holders 106, Fig. 12, are provided with two type characters disposed on adjacent perpendicular surfaces of the type holders. The type holder 91, Fig. 4, which is mounted rotatably on a rod has a hexagonal cross-sectional area and alternate peripheral surfaces are provided with type characters 95, 96, 97. The type holders have a high magnetic permeability and low frictional resistance and are made from a mixture of iron powder and a binder which is moulded and sintered under pressure.
