Abstract

1,179,044. Rotary pumps. ACF. INDUSTRIES, Inc. March 22, 1967 [June 28, 1966], No.13448/67. Heading F1F. A motor driven rotary positive-displacement pump for supplying liquid fuel to an automobile comprising a pump body 46, Figs.2 and 3, having a suction inlet 63, a discharge outlet 59, a peripheral flange 52 to which a casing 21 enclosing a direct current motor 22 is sealingly attached and a pump chamber 47 within which an eccentrically mounted rotor 52a fitted with outwardly-sliding, spring-loaded vanes 53 rotates. The pump body 46 also includes a relatively large intermediate chamber 64 which, except in the region of the discharge port, surrounds the pump chamber to serve as a reservoir to assure an immediate supply of fuel on starting the engine. The chamber 64 is divided into two portions by a filter element 67. Fuel from the pump discharge is urged upwardly through a passage 73 into the casing 21 to cool the motor. After circulating about the motor the fuel is returned to the pump inlet through a non-return valve 81 which opens when the pressure in the casing and hence discharge pressure reaches a predetermined value. The valve 81 will permit a maximum accumulation of fuel and vapour within the casing 21 before it opens, functions to regulate pressure fluctuations in the cooling liquid and assures rapid response of the pump to a demand for fuel at the carburetter under vapour lock or partial vapour lock conditions.
