Abstract
1,178,685. Plastics pipes. REDLAND PIPES Ltd. 25 April, 1967 [27 Jan., 1966], No. 3637/66. Heading F2P. A plastics pipe, particularly adapted to withstand internally and externally applied pressure and for use e.g. as drainage, sewage, gas, mains water pipes and as electric cable ducting, comprises a core tube 3 of hollow profiled plastics strip 2 which is made, e.g. of polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, or nylon and each turn of which is bonded to the preceding and succeeding turn, and an outer layer of fibrous material, e.g. monofilaments, threads, or tapes of glass fibre, nylon, or polyesters, or animal or vegetable fibres, and hardenable synthetic resin, e.g. a polyester, polyurethane, polyether, epoxide, or phenolic resin, the fibrous material being wrapped, tensioned or untensioned, around the core tube 3 and being bonded by the resin into a hard exterior coating 11. The strip 2, which can be used for conveying heat exchange fluid, may, as shown, be extruded from a die 4 and coated along its forward edge with an adhesive by means of a roller 5 before being wound on to a rotating, watercooled, mandrel 2 which, for batch production, is preferably coated with a release agent, e.g. grease, is not tapered, and is preferably constructed so that its cross-section may be reduced. A stationary drive member 6 is located at a position where the tube becomes rigid, the tube being passed to a wrapping station 7 in which fibrous material 8 from bobbins 9 is drawn through a bath 10 of curable synthetic resin and wound, under slight tension, on to the core tube 3. Additional resin may be sprayed on to the tube 3 from nozzles 12. The tube 3 may be heated in an oven 13 to accelerate its hardening and passed over rollers 15 for cutting in pieces by a travelling saw 14. The strip has a smooth inner surface, which forms the internal wall of the tube 3, a convex outer surface, a bevelled tongue along one, and a corresponding bevelled lip along the other. In a modification, Fig. 4, not shown, the strip forms a tube 3 with a smooth exterior face, the drive member 6 being unusable in this case. A heated slug may be passed through the formed tube.
