Abstract
1,177,131. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. 6 Feb., 1967, No. 5655/67. Heading B5K. [Also in Divisions F2 and H1] An insulating sleeve 14 having a continuous ultrasonically welded seam 17 at the overlap of edges 15, 16, is formed from an organic strip including oriented fibres of a thermoplastic polymer. The strip may consist of an autogenously bonded network of polyester fibres within which the oriented fibres are interlaced. The strip may be a laminate of non-woven fibres (18), Fig. 4 (not shown), and an oriented polyester film (19), Fig. 4 (not shown); 100% polyethylene terephthalate may be used for both laminate components. The seam may extend longitudinally (Fig. 1, not shown) or helically (Fig. 2, not shown) and the sleeve may be coated with an insulating film of a flexible epoxy resin or a polyurethane &c. The strip may be made of polyethylene terephthalate paper which may contain an inert material such as mica or made of plain weave polyethylene terephthalate or plain weave hexamethylene-adipamide (nylon 66).
