A building element for the construction of toys and models comprises two polyhedra of identical shape and dimensions e.g. 10 and 11, or 16 and 17, the length of each being twice the width and four times the thickness, and the polyhedra are positioned one above the other so that they are in contact but aligned differently, the contact area being equal to one half the area of the contacting face. The two polyhedra may be perpendicular to each other and the corners of each longitudinal edge may be rounded or cut away. They may be of different colours and can be made from wood, plastics, ceramic or metal. Additional polyhedra may be placed on the upper and lower surfaces of the original element, and may or may not be in identical alignment with the respective polyhedron of the original element.
