Abstract

1,176,971. Laminates. POLYMER PROCESSING RESEARCH INSTITUTE Ltd. 20 Feb., 1967 [18 Feb., 1966], No. 7996/67. Heading B5N. A method of making a laminate comprises adhering under a pressure of at least 50 Kg./ cm.<SP>2</SP>, two or more layers of after-stretched molecularly oriented film or at least one layer of said film and at least one layer of wood veneer, paper, metal, non-stretched polymer film, organic or inorganic fibrous sheet material or cloth, while heating at a temperature within the softening range of said oriented film, without relaxing the molecular orientation of the oriented film, an adhesive of softening point no higher than that of the oriented film being interposed between adjacent layers of oriented film and other sheet material. A wide variety of orientable materials may be used and quantitative examples disclose the use of polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, nylon and an emulsion polymer of ethylene and acrylamide.
