Abstract

1,176,130. Toy disc gramophones. ASAHI TOY CO. Ltd. 29 June, 1968, No. 31180/68. Heading G5R. A record player for installation in a toy comprises a chassis adapted to house a battery, and has an electric motor, a pick-up and a hinged cover; a turn-table is journalled to the hinged cover by a shaft so that a record can be fitted or detached freely when the hinged cover is open, and the motor can drive the turn-table when the cover is closed. Playback.-Figs. 1, 2 and 5 show the apparatus during playback. The turntable 16 is driven through a belt 21 engaging a pulley 23 on the shaft of a motor 22 energized by a battery 36, Fig. 2, through a switch S, Fig. 1, closed at this time. The record 19 is held on the turntable by a spring 20. The sound is reproduced mechanically by a needle 48, boss 47 (on tone arm 44), a guide arm 56 in contact with the boss 47, and a speaker 54 secured near the end of the guide arm. During the operative traverse of the needle the boss 47 has sliding contact with guide arm 56 and is pressed downwards by a leaf spring 60 bearing on the guide arm. The boss 47 protrudes through a slot 50 in the upper surface 32 of a chassis 12. End of play.-As the needle reaches the end of its operative traverse the boss 47 on the tone arm 44 pushes the movable contact 67 away from the fixed contact 68 of the switch S to stop the motor. The "cover" 15, (at the underside on Figs. 2 and 5), hinged at 14, and on which the turntable 16 alone is mounted may then be swung outwards by pulling lug 69, Fig. 3. The switch S is maintained open by spring 60 acting on boss 47 through the guide arm 56. If desired the record may now be changed. Re-starting.-The cover 15 is swung back to the closed position. The needle 48 is still in the neighbourhood of the centre of the record 19. An operating lever 66, Fig. 2, is now pressed. This acts on a projection 64, Fig. 1, forming part of a generally annular actuator 61 pivoted at 62 in bearings 63, and normally held in the Fig. 2 position by a leaf spring 65. The pressing of lever 66 pivots actuator 61, which raises guide arm 56 (against its spring 60) free of contact with the boss 47 on tone arm 44. A torsion spring 51, Figs. 1 and 5, wound around the tone arm shaft 49 and having its free end located in an aperture 45 in the tone arm, now serves to swing the tone arm outwards to the record periphery. The movable contact 67 thereupon springs back to close switch S and restart the motor. When the lever 66 is released again, spring 60 urges needle 48 on to the record through guide arm 56 and boss 47. Playing then proceeds.
