Abstract

1,175,795. Grafting keratin fibres. DEERING MILLIKEN RESEARCH CORP. 16 May, 1968 [22 May, 1967], No. 23387/68. Heading C3G. [Also in Division D1] A continuous process for grafting a substrate comprising keratin fibres with an ethylenically unsaturated compound comprises the steps of passing the substrate through a zone in which the ethylenically unsaturated compound contacts the substrate, passing the substrate through an aqueous solution comprising a polymerization catalyst under such conditions that the unsaturated compound is grafted into the fibres, leading the substrate out of the aqueous solution and drying the substrate. Specified monomers, which may be in solution, include C 1 to C 12 -alkyl esters of acrylic esters, mixtures of such esters with each other or with styrene and styrene/dichlorostyrene mixtures. Suitable catalysts include redox systems. The catalyst solution may contain a swelling agent for the fibres and a wetting agent. The graft polymerization may be conducted in an apparatus comprising a zone containing the monomer and a vessel containing the catalyst solution, the substrate being passed successively through the zone and the vessel by means of moving endless belts. In the examples, wool top is grafted with n-butyl methacrylate or methyl methacrylate and a polyethylene terephthalatewool blend fabric is grafted with n-butyl methacrylate.
