Abstract
1,175,658. Selective printing. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. 20 May, 1968 [19 June, 1967], No. 23878/68. Heading B6F. A thermal printing device for printing on a thermally-sensitive record material 31 comprises a first set of electrically resistive printing elements 12 and a second set of electrically resistive printing elements 14 crossing the first set to form a matrix of thermal printing locations such as 22 where an element 12 and an element 14 cross, and electrical supply means for the first and second sets whereby printing on the material 31 occurs in the vicinity of those matrix locations which are subject to coincident current energization. The current heating in a single element is insufficient to affect the material 31 whereas coincident energization of a pair of elements is sufficient to do so at the crossing point of the elements. The elements 12, 14 may be assembled on either side of an insulating substrate 10, for example made of silicon dioxide, or may be separately mounted on a pair of substrates (28, 34), Fig. 1, not shown, the material (32) being placed between the assemblies. Each element may be formed of electrically resistive material such as tin oxide, rhenium or tantalum. Coatings of conductive material such as copper or gold may be applied to the elements between crossing points (Fig. 3, not shown).
