Abstract

1,175,262. Polyvinyl aromatic compounds. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 26 July, 1967, No. 34284/67. Headings C3G and C3P. A vinyl aromatic monomer is continuously polymerized in the optional presence of up to 20% by wt. of a hydrocarbon diluent, in a plurality of polymerization zones inter-connected in series which comprise a first polymerization zone, an agitated intermediate zone where the reaction mixture is maintained in a homogeneous condition and heat of polymerization is removed by evaporation of the monomer and diluent (when present) and a finishing zone where polymerization is completed to the desired degree under adiabatic, plug-flow conditions. The monomer may be styrene which may be mixed with polybutadiene, mineral white oil and a mixture of trinonyl-phenyl phosphite and 2,6-di-tert.- butyl p-cresol as antioxidants. In the Figure, styrene and elastomer is fed via line 1 to reactors 2, 3 and (via line 4) 5 in which polymerization occurs, styrene monomer vapour is removed via line 6 to condenser 7 and storage vessel 8 from which it returns to 5 via line 9; hydrocarbon diluent is fed via line 10; polymerization mixture is withdrawn via line 11 and fed to finishing reactor 12 which is operated liquid full under adiabatic, plug-flow (i.e. absence of intermixing or chanelling) conditions; the final product is removed via line 13 to devolatilizing extruder 14 where residual monomer and traces of diluent are removed via line 15.
