Abstract
1,174,848. Melamine. CHEMICAL CONSTRUCTION CORP. 9 March, 1967, No. 42696/67. Divided out of 1,105,315. Addition to 1,105,315. Heading C2C. In the synthesis of melamine from urea or other melamine precursor, a stream of vaporized melamine, or other precursor, containing a molar excess of ammonia is passed through a heated catalyst bed comprising activated alumina particles having an internal surface area of 10-80 sq. m/g. The catalyst bed may be fixed or fluidized or a combination of fixed and fluidized beds may be employed. A fluidized bed is preferably operated at 520-750‹ F. using an ammonia/urea, or other precurser, weight ratio of at least 0À7: 1 and catalyst particles having a size in the range 60-200 mesh. A fixed bed is preferably operated at 600-750‹ F. and ammonia introduced at a temperature below 500‹ F. to moderate the reaction temperature. The process is illustrated by reference to flow diagrams (not shown).
