Abstract

1,174,719. Chromogenic printing inks. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. 25 Oct., 1968 [6 Dec., 1967], No. 50771/68. Heading C4A. A normally colourless, basic, chromogenic printing ink which reacts with an acidic recording material sensitizing substance to produce a black colour comprises an organic solvent having dissolved therein 3,3-bis-(1-dimethylaminophenyl) - 6 - dimethylaminophthalide, viz. crystal violet lactone and/or 3,7-bis-(dimethylamino)-10-benzoyl phenothiazine, viz. benzoyl leuco methylene blue in combination with (i) 4,4<SP>1</SP> - bis-(dimethylamino)benzophenone-N- phenyl imide (orange); or in combination with (ii) 4,4<SP>1</SP> - bis - (dialkylamino)benzophenone (yellow) and any one of the following (red): 3,3 - bis - (1,2 - dimethylindol - 3yl)phthalide; 3 - (1 - ethyl, 2 - methylindol - 3yl) - 3 - (2- methylindol - 3yl) phthalide; 2 - chloro - 6- diethylamino - 3 - methylspiro [9 - H - xanthene- 9,1<SP>1</SP> - phthalide]; or 9 - diethylaminospiro [1,2 - H - benzo(a)xanthene - 12,1<SP>1 </SP>- phthalide]. Specified solvents are toluene, petroleum distillate, perchloroethylene, xylene, high boiling petroleum fractions and chlorinated diphenyls. The acidic reactant may be kaolin, attapulgite, silica gel, a zeolite or an organic polymer.
