Abstract

1,173,584. Coating metals. HUNTER DOUGLAS-INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 21 Dec., 1966 [4 April, 1966], No. 57286/66. Heading B2K. Tin or tin plate, or metals or alloys having an analogous behaviour with regard to melting and crystallization properties is coated with a layer of lacquer and quickly heated to a temperature above the melting point of the tin or other metal or alloy to cure the lacquer layer and simultaneously cause the surface metal or alloy layer temporarily to melt, and thereafter the material is cooled to a lower temperature, the heating time and temperature being such that the surface layer of the metal or alloy reaches an obviously molten stage before becoming resolidified. The resin may be cured at 300‹C. for 40 seconds, and the material then cools in water at 70 to 75‹ Centigrade. The heating temperature and heating period are chosen such that the molten metal or alloy does not drip away or have its adhesion to an underlayer impaired. The speed of cooling such that after its recrystallization the metal or alloy does not have an undesired crystal structure. The method can be carried out continuously as well as discontinuously. The material can be coated on one or both sides. In example 1 tin plate is lacquered with a white epoxy resin to a layer thickness of 8 to 10 microns. The epoxy resin is then cured at 300‹ Centigrade for 40 seconds, and the material is cooled in water at 70 to 75‹ Centigrade.
