Abstract
1,172,993. Rotary compressors and motors. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. Dec.28, 1966 [Feb.23, 1966], No.8032/66. Heading F1F. A rotary positive-displacement compressor or motor having at least one rotor forming chambers whose volume changes between low and highpressure zones, wherein a jet of coolant fluid identical with the working fluid is injected into the low-pressure zone. As shown, a Roots' type compressor having identical rotors 2, 3 connected by phasing gears to rotate in the direction of the arrows, includes in the inlet line 8 an air-injection pipe 10 through which cooling air under pressure from a source 11 and controlled by means 12 is injected at the zone of intermesh of the two rotors in the operating condition of the compressor when little or no operating air is being passed through it to cool the rotors. The rotors and housing will thus be cooled substantially equally and thus avoid uneven expansion of the compressor parts and possible seizure and allow closer limits between the rotors and housing to be worked to. The invention may also be applied to a gear-pump when used with a compressible working fluid.
