Abstract

1,172,631. Fuels. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 14 March, 1968 [10 May, 1967], No. 12482/68. Heading C5G. [Also in Division C3] Petroleum distillate fuel compositions comprise as pour point depressant 0.005 to 2.5% by weight of an oil-soluble halogenated copolymer of 20 to 80 weight per cent ethylene and 20 to 80 weight per cent C 3-18 α-olefin having a viscosity average molecular weight of 10,000 to 500,000 and containing 0À25 to 20 weight per cent of halogen. Ethylene/propylene copolymers may also contain units of a C 4-28 α-olefin and/or multiolefrin and preferred halogens are chlorine and bromine. The copolymer may be added as a concentrated solution in a hydrocarbon solvent. Examples describe the addition to 50/50 straight run/ cracked middle distillate fuels of chlorinated ethylene/propylene copolymers and brominated ethylene/propylene/methylene norbornene copolymers and, for comparison, the unhalogenated copolymers.
