Abstract

1,172,435. Double layer electrodes. VARTA A.G. 28 March, 1967 [1 April, 1966], No. 14139/67. Heading H1B. [Also in Division C7] A double-layer, porous, gas-diffusion electrode suitable for use as a hydrogen electrode, is formed by hot pressing or rolling followed by sintering a metal powder, e.g. Ni, to form a plate and then flame- or plasma-spraying a metal, e.g. Ni-Al alloy and Ni, on to the plate whilst blowing a gas against the plate in the spraying area to cool it. The ratio of the Ni alloy to the Ni powder may be 1:2 and the particle size of the alloy 40 to 50 Á, and that of the Ni 85 to 100 Á. The plate may be formed by pressing and sintering at 650‹ C. in hydrogen. Granules of Na 2 CO 3 may be forced into one surface during pressing and subsequently dissolved out with water after sintering.
