Abstract

1,172,209. Metallurgical ladles. AMERICAN CAST IRON PIPE CO. 20 June, 1968 [31 July, 1967], No. 29445/68. Heading F4B. [Also in Division C7] A ladle for use in treating molten metal with treating agents in the form of briquettes, or bodies of porous metallic or refractory materials filled or impregnated with reactive metal, comprises a refractory-lined metal shell 10 having an apertured wall 14 of refractory material spaced above the bottom of said shell, the shell being open at both the top and the bottom ends, and a separately-formed bottom closure member 13 having means for containing a predetermined quantity of treating material 27, such as magnesium-impregnated coke in lump form. In operation, with the lumps of treating material effectively trapped in the space between a sand layer 25 and the bottom of wall 14, a predetermined weight of the molten metal to be treated is poured rapidly into the ladle into direct contact with the treating material which reacts immediately, but is prevented from floating to the surface of the molten metal by the wall 14.
