Abstract

1,172,285. Cylinder intake systems; heating charge. VOLVO A. B. Oct. 30, 1967 [Nov. 8, 1966], No.49168/67. Heading F1B. In an intake system having at least two carburetters 1, 2 supplying individual main ducts 6 and 7, each main duct communicates with a duct 12, 13 leading to a common mixing chamber 14 and a duct 15, 16 leading back from the mixing chamber. A shut-off valve 17, 18, provided in each main duct between the ducts 12, 13 and 15, 16 is adjustable so that at idling and low output of the engine the valve will be closed and the whole fuel-air mixture passed through the mixing chamber and at high engine output the valve will be opened and substantially the whole mixture passed through the main duct. One wall of the mixing chamber 14 forms part of the wall of the exhaust pipe 19 to provide heating for the fuel-air mixture and ribs 20 project into the chamber to promote mixing. The valves 17, 18 are operated by a cam on the spindle of the respective mixture throttle 4 and 5. The spindle (21, Fig. 2, not shown), of the mixture throttle 4 is secured to a lever (22) formed with a cam face (23) which co-operated with a roller (27) on a lever (26) secured to the shut-off valve spindle (25). The throttle spindle (21) is rotatable through an angle before the cam face (23) contacts the roller (27) and then the shut-off valve spindle (25) is rotated more and more relatively to the turning angle of the throttle spindle until the valve and throttle simultaneously reach their fully open positions.
