Abstract
1,172,272. Coaxial transmission lines. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 9 Jan., 1967, No. 1100/67. Heading H1A. [Also in Division G2] A coaxial transmission line includes an optical fibre core 1 comprising one or more non- homogeneous filaments of material of high refractive index sheathed with material of low refractive index, constituting a first optical electromagnetic energy propagation channel surrounded by a second electromagnetic energy propagation channel coaxial with the first. The second channel may be constituted by inner and outer coaxial metal conductors 2, 4 spaced by dielectric 3, or by a sheath (7), (Fig. 2, not shown) of P.T.F.E. having a loss tangent of less than 10<SP>-4</SP> for frequencies of the order of 10<SP>9</SP> cps., or by a sheath (9), (Fig. 3, not shown) of low loss glass having a loss tangent of less than 10<SP>-8</SP> for frequencies of the order of 10<SP>14</SP> cps. A protective sheath 5 may be provided. The conductors 2, 4 may be of braided copper and the dielectric 3 of polythene or foamed polystyrene. The sheath of the core 1 maybe of polythene.
