Abstract
1,172,042. Casting processes. INSTITUT ELEKTROSVARKI IMENI E.O. PATONA. 19 Sept., 1967, No. 42668/67. Heading B3F. Molten slag is introduced into a mould 3 (for electro-slag refining of consumable metal electrodes) through an opening 4 and channel 5 in a plate 2 located between the open bottom of the mould and a stool 1, by pouring it into a passage 6 in a member 7 placed over one end of the channel 5. As the level of slag in the mould 3 approaches a consumable electrode the melting begins. The walls of the opening 4 and the channel 5 slope downwardly and at its top the opening corresponds to the internal cross-section of the mould. The plate 2 may be of graphite or may be of steel or copper and have a cooling- water channel 11; it has projections 12 for centring the mould 3 when it is replaced after raising it to remove the ingot.
