Abstract

1,171,296. Flocked articles. T. F. FIRTH & SONS Ltd. 13 Dec., 1966 [30 Dec., 1965], No. 55194/65. Heading B2E. Mouldable flocked material comprises a layer of stretchable fabric 3 which has been bonded to a layer of thermoplastic material 1 whilst the latter was in a liquid or tacky state, the fabric 3 or the material 1 having flock 5 adhered thereto. In one method of making the flocked material, release material 2 has a layer of p.v.c. applied thereto by passing it beneath a curtain 1a of p.v.c. in the liquid state. Whilst the p.v.c. is still liquid or tacky a stretchable fabric 3 is applied thereto at the nip of pressure rollers 6 and the laminate so formed is dried beneath a drier 7, after which the material 2 is removed. A coating 4 of thermoplastic or thermosetting paste or adhesive is then applied to the p.v.c. layer or, as shown, to the fabric 3, and flock 5 is applied to the coating 4 e.g. by electro-deposition. The flexible flocked material so formed is cured or fused. The flocked material may be subsequently formed, e.g. by vacuum-forming, and may be used in upholstery or as a vehicle floor covering.
