Abstract
1,170,768. Discharging molten metal by gaseous pressure. J. S. CAMPBELL. Nov. 9, 1966 [Nov.30, 1965], No.50197/66. Heading F1R. Molten metal is discharged from a container 1 to a nozzle 21 by pressure gas introduced below the level of the liquid from a conduit 23. The gas is supplied at two alternative pressures such that one pressure maintains a ready to pour column having an upper level 29 and the other pressure raises the level to pour level 27 so that liquid is discharged over the lip 17. The pressures are controlled by valves 45, 47 and selected by a solenoid actuated valve 51. The gas may be nitrogen or argon. The actuating gas is also introduced above the liquid levels in the end of the conduit 15 by means of a conduit 57 having a control valve 59; pressure is controlled by a pressure switch 61 which opens a vent valve 65. At the end of a pour the level of liquid is quickly brought to the level 29 by introducing pressure above the liquid level in conduit 15 by closing valve 65 and opening valve 73. The pour cycle may be controlled by a time switch 93. Bubbling of the gas through the molten metal serves to purify it and the inert gas prevents oxidation.
