Abstract
117,032. Alexander, A. E., (Weller & Co., C.). Dec. 31, 1917. Sand-blast. - In a shop in which work is cleansed by a sand jet and the resultant dust is removed by an artificially-produced current of air, adjustable air-admission channels leading from the atmosphere to the cleaning-room are so disposed that air currents in the form of a wedge are always directed on to the spot where most dust is forming and the workman is not inconvenienced thereby. The shop has a ceiling and walls of sheet iron and comprises a cleaning-room 1, Fig. 3, and a small room 2, in which is placed the sandbox 3 and the workman usually stands. The work is moved into and out of the room 1 through a double door 4 and on a track 6 and the room 2 has a door 5. Air is drawn from the room 1 through an outlet 15 in the ceiling by an exhauster, and air enters through top and bottom casings 17 mounted in openings in the wall parts 16 to vertical rotatable cylinders 18, whence it passes through longitudinal slots to blocks 19, which can be adjusted by rotation of the cylinders to direct the currents of air on to the work. The room 1 has a grate floor 7, through which the sand &c. falls into a collecting-pit 8 extending also below the room 2. The pit narrows at the bottom, where a screen conveyer 9 is placed below an horizontal-wire sieve 11 to transport the sand to an elevator 10 conveying it back to the box 3, an apparatus for the removal of dust being provided in the conduit leading to the box and discharging through piping into the outlet 15. A mixing-apparatus and compressed-air piping 13 are provided at the bottom of the sand-box to cause the sand to be blown on to the work under high pressure by a conduit 14. In another form, air-admission channels 22, Fig. 5, are slidably mounted in vertical slots 21 in the wall parts 20 and are suspended by guide-rails by sleeves so that they can be moved longitudinally parallel to each other, as indicated by dot-and-dash lines, the inner ends of the channels being bent towards each other so that the currents of air therefrom cross at right-angles. The cleaning-room 1 has a double door 4<1> opposite the room 2.
