Abstract
1,170,151. Ignition systems. J.R. RICHARDS. Jan.3, 1967, No.254/67. Heading F1B. [Also in Division H1] An ignition system for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine comprises a distributer housing for connection with the crank-case of the engine, a shaft 29 journalled in the housing and connectable with the cam-shaft of the engine, a breaker cam 17 and a distributer arm 8, normally closed breaker points 15, 15a in the housing and periodically opened by and in response to rotation of the cam, a plurality of contacts 24 carried by the housing a solid state switching device 11 comprising an anode, grounded cathode and a control gate, a resistor 13 connected between the anode and gate, a ground connection between the gate, through the points, a first circuit connection between the anode and the arm, a plurality of resistors 4 carried by the housing, an electrical connection between one terminal of each of the plurality of resistors and a respective one of the contacts, a common terminal fixed to the housing and an electrical connection between the remaining terminals of all the plurality of resistors and the common terminal. The converter 3 steps up the voltage over the line 23 to about 250 volts. As described the solid state switching device 11 is a silicon controlled rectifier.
