[Also in Division C3] Lubricating oil and fuel compositions comprise detergent additives of formula or where R is a monovalent radical derived from an olefin polymer of molecular weight 500 to 3000; R 1 is alkylene, phenylene, alkylphenylene, haloalkylene or halophenylene, or a chain radical containing 4 to 16 C atoms and 1 to 6 N atoms, or a said chain radical containing 1 to 4 piperazino or phenylene radicals, or a substituted chain radical containing 4 to 16 C atoms wherein the substituents are alkyl, aminoalkyl, alkylaminoalkyl, dialkylaminoalkyl, N-piperazinoalkyl, alkyl piperazino alkyl or chain radicals containing 4 to 8 C atoms and 1 to 3 N atoms or 2 to 4 piperazino radicals; R 2 is H, alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkenyl, substituted alkenyl, cycloalkenyl, aryl, substituted aryl or a heterocyclic radical of 4 to 10 atoms in which the hetero atoms are O, N and/or S; R 3 is H or alkyl; Y is wherein R 4 and R 5 are H or alkyl, and Z is a direct linkage, alkylene or alkenylene, R 2 representing H, alkyl, alkenyl or haloalkyl when Y is -N = CR 4 -. Specified oils are paraffinic and naphthenic mineral oils, coal derivatives and synthetic oils, e.g. alkylene and alkylene oxide polymers, dicarboxylic esters, alkylated benzenes, silicate esters and silicon polymers. The fuel may be gasoline. The compositions may contain conventional additives such as other detergents and dispersants, corrosion and oxidation inhibitors, extreme pressure agents, viscosity index improvers, pour point depressors and anti-foaming agents. Many suitable reactants for the preparation of detergent additives of the invention and examples describe oil compositions comprising reaction products of polybutenyl ketones with (10) tetraethylene pentamine and neotridecanoic acid, (11) triethylene tetramine and butyraldehyde, (12 and 14-16) tetraethylene pentamine and butyraldehyde, (17) tetraethylene pentamine and acetic acid, (18) p-phenylene diamine and butyric acid, (19) p-phenylene diamine and butyraldehyde, (20) tetraethylene pentamine and azelaic acid, and (21) tetraethylene pentamine and azelaldehyde. Compositions with polybutenyl ketones are also disclosed.
