Abstract
116,995. Rapson, F. L. Oct. 1, 1917. Jacks.-Motor and other road vehicles are provided with lifting-jacks comprising arm s pivoted to the frame near each wheel and connected by links to hand .operated sleeves sliding on rods or shafts. The sleeves may be moved by screw-andnut or ratchet devices, and the jacks may be arranged to be operated singly, in pairs, or all simultaneouslv. As shown in Fig. 3, the jack 1 is pivoted to a bracket on the axle 6 and is connected by a link 9 to a sleeve 11 having a nut 10 engaging a threaded shaft 13 mounted at one end in a bearing 14 carried in the bracket 6 and provided with a bevel-gear 23 operated by a second gear 22 on a handoperated shaft 21. The foot of the jack is provided with a ball 36 or roller. The nut 10 is provided with bearing-balls 40 which are retained by end-pieces 41, or, as shown in Fig. 10, a continuous passage may be made for the balls by a tube 48. Each jack may be provided with operating-mechanism, or one operating-sleeve may be connected to a pair of jacks, or the jacks may be connected in pains to a sleeve on a single shaft with right and left handed screws. In a modification the sleeve 10 is provided with oppositely directed rack teeth 51, 52, Fig. 15, which are alternately engaged by teeth on a pawl 53 carried on a lever 54. The pawl is moved to engage either set of teeth by means of a rod 60 engaged by a projection 63 on a detachable handle 62; as shown, the teeth 52 are engaged. When the handle is placed on the lever with the projection out of engagement with the rod 60, the spring 61 brings the pawl into engagement with the ratchet teeth 51. The sleeve 10 is mounted on the shaft 64, Fig. 16, by means of two ball bearing nuts 68 which act as retaining devices during the idle strokes of the lever 54. In a further modification the sleeve 10 is directly operated by a lever having a locking-device comprising a lug engaging teeth in a quadrant.
