Abstract

1,169,484. Brake adjusting mechanism and warning means. WESTINGHOUSE BREMSENUND APPARATEBAU G.m.b.H. 18 Jan., 1968 [21 Jan., 1967], No. 2724/68. Heading F2E. In a brake adjusting mechanism including a brake lever 2 whose position is automatically adjusted as a consequence of brake lining wear, a warning device is provided for indicating brake lining wear. The warning device may comprise a switch 21 which is mounted on the brake lever 2 adapted to be automatically adjusted in position relative to a cam-shaft 1, and a cooperating lug 19 of a ring 15 which is secured in relation to the shaft 1, the lugs 19 gradually approaching the plunger 20 of the switch as wear adjustment takes place such that the switch is actuated to cause operation of a warning light or audible warning means when the maximum permissible wear has occurred. The ring 15 has arcuate slots by which it is adjustably secured to a support carried by the shaft 1 so that, in conjunction with a scale 16 carried by the ring and by means of a pointer 23 on the lever 2, the amount of rotational adjustment permitted is indicated and the device may be set correctly for a particular brake and lining thickness. The automatic adjuster comprises a worm wheel 3 carried by the shaft 1 and a co-operating worm 4 rotatable in the lever via a one-way coupling 6, lug 7 and a lever 9 which is pivoted at 8 to the lever 2 and linked at 13 via linkage to a part of the vehicle which is fixed with respect to brake lever 2.
