Abstract

1,169,168. Electroless nickel coating baths. J. BERENATO METEL FINISHING CO. Inc. and F.E. COSTELLO. Oct.20, 1966 [Oct.23, 1965], No.47054/66. Heading C7F. An aqueous alkaline electroless nickel coating bath for coating plastic or metal articles comprises 1À35 to 5À4 oz/gal nickel ions, e.g. added as NiSO 4 and NiCl 2 ; 2À45 to 14À7 oz/gal hypophosphite ions, e.g. added as NaH 2 PO 2 ; and a stabilizing agent such as sodium citrate and ammonium chloride. The weight ratio of nickel to hypophosphite ions is preferably 1:2À7; and the pH 8À5, preferably maintained by adding NH 4 OH. Ammonium hypophosphite may be substituted for NaH 2 PO 2 and NH 4 OH. Prior to coating, the articles may be mechanically roughened or chemically etched by dipping in a solution of chromic and sulphuric acid, then dipped in a bath containing PACl 2 and HCl, optionally with SnCl 2 . The coated articles may be subsequently electro-plated with Cu, Ni, Cr or Ag.
