Abstract

1,168,792. Mine roof supports. K. M. GROETSCHEL. 21 April, 1966 [21 April, 1965], No. 17405/66. Headings E1E and E1P. In a mine-roof support, a portion of flexible mat 19, 18 is stored on a moving means and a portion is led off supported adjacent the roof 15 and underpinned at intervals along its length. The mat, which may be of woven or slat material, is carried in a roll 18 on a spindle 16 rigid with a coal mining machine 10 moving on conveyor runway 13. After anchoring at one end, the mat is fed out over a roller 20 to the roof and is supported by advancing long beam 48. The mat may be secured to the roof by cement or other quick setting adhesive. A self-advancing support, used with the invention, comprises a base 35 having a single hydraulic prop 38 supporting the rear end of a superstructure 44 and a multi-section prop 37 having a yoke 42 supporting the forward end of the superstructure. The base 35 is coupled by an advancing jack 59 to the conveyer 13. The long beam 48 is supported on the inner section 40 of the prop 37 through a shoe 53, the long beam being advanced relative to the shoe and superstructure by a jack 58 or by adjustable packing means. The forward end of the long beam is pre-loaded by leaf springs 73 anchored to a cross piece 47 rigid with the superstructure 44. The rear end of the long beam is carried in a hollow member 62 in pin 65 and slot 64 connection with the long beam and adjustable longitudinally by a jack 66 connected to a cross-member 51 joining the two roof bars of the long beam. Additional pressure on the forward end of the long beam is supplied by short jacks 70 between the beam and the superstructure to tilt the long beam. The long beam may be curved to bear hollow at its central portion and may have a universally pivotted forward roof engaging plate or a jack operated extension 75 to support a part of the roof exposed by a scarped fall. The rear of the long beam may be positioned between the roof bars of the superstructure by spring-loaded or manually clamped transverse pins. In another embodiment, the long beam is loaded at its forward roof engaging end by a jack between the beam and the base 35; the beam may be supported from the base by leaf springs to prevent misalignment on sloping seams or two loading jacks may be used. The rear end of the long beam may be supported by a spring retracted hydraulic prop to allow advancing of the base and superstructure props; the supporting prop being supported by leaf springs to compensate for sloping seams. A further embodiment utilizes a separate prop in place of the inner section of the multi-section prop and advancing is carried out by a jack between the base 35 and the base of the separate prop. The long beam may be supported by both cantilever springs and by a diagonal jack between the base and a cantilever beam pivotted to the forepart of the superstructure. Additionally the superstructure may have forepoling arms.
