Abstract

1,167,648. Vehicle suspensions. MOULTON DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. 17 June, 1968 [17 March, 1967], No. 12705/67. Heading B7D. [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] A vehicle suspension comprises a diaphragmtype hydraulic displacer unit acting between each wheel and the sprung structure, liquid displaced from which being carried by means of an hydraulically hard pipe to and from a plurality of hydraulic accumulator springs operating in parallel, one of which has a chamber having a resilient wall composed at least in part by a rigid metal member which when free is movable in response to increase or decrease in the volume of the fluid filled chamber, and there are provided means which can be actuated to render the metal member immovable and to limit the volume of the fluid-filled chamber, the displaced fluid being utilized to alter the pressure of the liquid in the system and hence altering the height of the sprung structure of the vehicle in relation to the associated wheel. As shown, Fig. 1, a pair of hydraulic displacer units 10, acting between suspension arms 1, 2 and the vehicle structure are connected by means of an hydraulically hard pipe 17, through damper valves 23 to a series of accumulator springs each comprising a cylinder 19, a movable wall 20 and a spring 21, in parallel with each other and a supplementary accumulator 30 of similar construction, in conjunction with which is an electrically operated screw-jack 40 which has an extensible strut 41 which may be brought to bear against the wall 32 to cause it to adopt position B, expelling fluid from the spring, and to render the wall immovable. In a modification, Fig. 3, the hydraulic accumulator comprises a housing 50 having a conically tapering part 51, a frusto-conical cup-shaped metal member 52 and a rubber annular spring 53 bonded to the cup-shaped member 52 and housing 51, In a further modification, a single hydraulic actuating device may be arranged to operate simultaneously on the metal members of two eupplementary hydraulic accumulator springs respectively associated with the suspensions of corresponding wheels on opposite sides of the vehicle.
