Abstract
1,167,378. Extruding. LOEWY ROBERTSON ENG. CO. Ltd. 6 April, 1967, No. 15933/67. Heading B3P. In a metal extrusion press having an axially movable billet container 18, Fig. 8, a die assembly 8, 10 mounted in a movable die carrier 28, and cutting means 48 movable across the extrusion axis for severing the discard; the die assembly is releasably secured to the carrier by locking members 52, Fig. 2, actuated by interengageable members 60, 80 on the carrier 28 and the stationary press platen 2 respectively, the members 60, 80 being disengaged upon movement of the carrier. The latter may be a rotary turret but is preferably a slide 28 movable in upper and lower guides 30, 32. The die assembly consisting of die 8 and holder 10, is mounted upon a pad 36 adjustable by shims, in a recess 34 in the slide and is locked thereon by transversely slidable locking plates 52 actuated through pin-and-slot connections 64, 66 by shafts 60 on the die slide. These shafts have forked ends 60<SP>1</SP> which engage over flats on shafts 78, 80 rotatably mounted on the upper guide 30. These shafts are interconnected by link 108 and lever 96, 110 for simultaneous operation, by a compressed air motor 102. The forks 60<SP>1</SP> permit movement of the slide 28 when the plates 52 are in their locked position. After extrusion, the plates are released, and the container 18 is retracted, Fig. 9 (not shown) whereby the die assembly is withdrawn from the slide. The extruded product P is then severed from the discard D and dummy block 22 by a circular saw blade 48 driven by motor 50. The container 18 and die assembly are then moved to the left, the locking plates are engaged, the container is again retracted, Fig. 11 (not shown), and the discard D with the dummy block are removed from the rear face of the die by a shear 42 and fall into a tray. Both the saw 48 and shear 42 are adjustable along the extrusion axis. Alternatively the die assembly with the discard may be transferred by the slide to an inoperative position. In another arrangement, Fig. 12 (not shown) the discard is severed by the saw or shear between the die 8 and the container. The slide may carry two die assemblies and an opening (40), Fig. 1 (not shown) for discharge of a partially extruded billet. Reference is made to the extrusion of aluminium.
