Abstract

1,167,366. Measuring temperature electrically; resistance measurement. E.G. & G. INTERNATIONAL Inc. Nov.1, 1966, No.48932/66. Headings G1N and G1U. [Also in Division H3] An oscillator suitable for use in determining the resistance of a thermistor and thus its ambient temperature comprises two differential switching pairs, shown as transistors Q1, Q2 and Q1', Q2', having the output Q1, Q2 connected to the input of Q1', Q2' and with an R, C circuit coupling the output terminals of Q'1, Q'2 to one input Q1 of Q1, Q2. The resistance is switchable between two valves e.g. that of a thermistor TH and a reference resistance TH, to vary the frequency so that the frequency change represents the difference of resistance and this the difference of temperature. In operation, when Q1 becomes conducting a positive edge is applied through C to the line of Q1 (see edge I) to switch over the circuit. The capacitor C then discharges through TH or REF (see waveform portion II) until the voltage is such that Q1 is rendered non-conductive. The states of the transistors therefore reverse producing edge I' and discharge slope II. Thus the circuit oscillates. The capacitor and resistors are regarded as providing positive and negative feedback. A reference level is applied to the base of Q2 equal to the mean of the collector voltages of Q1' and Q2'.
