Abstract

1,167,285. Preserving polymeric gels. CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED. 7 March, 1968 [15 March, 1967], No. 11045/68. Heading ASE. [Also in Divisions B8 and G2] A method of preserving and storing swelled hydrophillic polymeric gels, e.g. in the form of contact lenses or prostheses, in aqueous solution comprises a container in which the solution is contacted by cation exchanger impregnated with silver reduced from silver ions. In one embodiment contact lenses are stored in aqueous solution above a porous bag of textile material e.g. polyamide, polyester, cotton &c. containing a cation exchanger impregnated with silver metal. In a modification, the exchanger is in a compartment between two stoppered compartments each holding a lens in solution. Further containers use either an exchanger in the form of a membrane between two perforated partitions or have the aqueous compartment lined with the exchanger. In a further form, the exchanger may rest below a false bottom in e.g. a polystyrene or polypropylene container, the gels being deposited on or suspended above the bottom. The silver exchanger may be formed by elution of a sulphonated styrene divinyl benzene polymer, or a carboxylic cation exchanger e.g. a methacrylic acid and divinvl benzene co-oplymer, with 10% hydrochloric acid, 5% nitric acid, water to neutralise then followed by a reaction with 5% silver nitrate solution and rinsing with distilled water. The reduction is carried out by flooding the exchanger with 10% hydrazine hydrate solution in 15% aqueous ammonia and washing with water to remove all traces of ammonia. The exchanger may be macroporous and the grain size should be large enough to prevent penetration of a bag wall. The bags are formed by stitching together both longitudinal edges of a folded web, followed by transverse spaced stitching and cutting the web down the middle to form two joined lengths of bags. After filling, the bag tops are stitched together and the bags separated.
