Abstract

Apparatus for urging a grinding tool 3 against a surface 10 to be ground, such as a vehicle superstructure, comprises a connecting rod 2 reciprocable by a crank 1 and carrying the tool, and a thrust bar 4 connected, on one hand, via a three-dimensional articulation F to the connecting rod and, on the other hand via a resilient intermediate member 5, guide means E and three-dimensional articulation D to a stationary mounted work cylinder 9. The rod 2 is connected to the crank 1 to effect movements of the tool, the cylinder pressing the tool with a constant force against the surface 10. In an alternative embodiment, the cylinder 9 is connected to the articulation D by way of a cranked lever. The pressure in the cylinder may be controlled by a cam, punched or magnetic tapes, or in accordance with the feel of the workpiece. The lengths of the limbs of the cranked lever may also be varied to adjust the force exerted by the cylinder on the tool.
