Abstract

1,166,824. Method of setting hair. PIFCO Ltd. 10 Jan., 1967 [13 Oct., 1965], No. 43349/65. Heading A4V. [Also in Division A5] A method of treating hair comprises enveloping at least a part of the head in a hood, introducing water vapour (in the form of steam or cold water vapour) into the hood to damp the hair, terminating the supply of water vapour to the interior of the hood and then drying the dampened hair by passage of warm air into the hood, the amount of water vapour introduced to within the hood being controlled by the amount of water provided by vapourization. The water vapour may be generated by (a) immersing an electric heater in water, or (b) allowing a continuous stream or droplets of water to impinge on the heater element of an electric heater, or (c) by allowing water to impinge on a crystal vibrating at ultrasonic frequency. Using method (c) either hot or cold water vapour may be produced. The apparatus used may consist of a hood in the form of a flexible mob cap connected by a flexible hose to a water vapour generator and a fan/electric heater unit, means being provided so that either the water vapour or warm air supply may be selected; or the apparatus may have a rigid hood supported on a stand, the fan/electric heater unit being in the upper part of the hood and the water vapour generator, which is attached to the stand, being connected to the hood by a flexible tube so that water vapour enters the hood via a plurality of openings in the inner surface of the hood. The rigid hood may have a channel around its rim to collect condensed water vapour. The method is used for setting hair and the process may be controlled by an automatic timer which may be coin operated.
