Abstract
1,166,724. Photo-sensitive materials and the production of masters therefrom. KEUFFEL & ESSER CO. Feb.16, 1967 [Feb.18, 1966], No.7530/67. Headings G2C and G2M. A photo-sensitive material comprises an ultraviolet light transparent support, an ultraviolet transparent scraper layer which is capable of being cleanly removed from the support and preferably comprising a thermoplastic binder in which is disposed a finely divided pigment and a layer containing a diazonium compound and an azo coupler. The material is preferably backed by a layer which absorbs ultraviolet radiation. The material is imagewise exposed and developed to produce a dye image and parts of the dye image areas are then removed with the underlying scraper layer to produce a.master used in photographic reproduction, the density of the dye image and the ultraviolet absorbent layer being sufficient to block the passage of ultraviolet radiation. The specified scraper layer is an acrylic resin in which is dispersed aluminium stearate and calcium carbonate whilst the specified ultraviolet absorbing layer is an acrylic resin in which is dispersed benzophenone, or a di- or tetra-hydroxy- or methoxy-benzophenone or a substituted acrylonitrile. The light-sensitive layer preferably contains a binder such as an acrylic resin or a cellulose ester and may also contain stearic acid, a dye and 2- oxohexamethylene imine. After production of the master, additional information may be provided by scraping away further parts of the scraper layer.
