Abstract

1,166,671. Air heating stoves. PARK ENG. (PADDOCK WOOD) Ltd. 7 July, 1967 [7 July, 1966], No. 30491/66. Heading F4S. A direct fired air heater comprises a jacket 4, a combustion chamber 1 spaced from the jacket to define an annular space through which air is blown (arrows B), a conical baffle 5 spaced downstream from the outlet of the combustion chamber to deflect the hot combustion gases issuing from the chamber 1 into contact with the air stream (arrows A), and air ducts 7, positioned symmetrically about the baffle 5, the inlet ends 14 of which, positioned upstream of the outlet of the combustion chamber, divert a proportion of the relatively cool air from the main stream into a box structure 8, spaced from the baffle, to cool the baffle 5 and to also heat the diverted air. The box structure 8 has a restricted outlet plate 10 having apertures 11 positioned to build up a minimum back pressure, to ensure a circulation of the diverted air within the box 8, as well as to allow a small proportion of the air to flow out of the box (arrows C) to break up hot spots. In another embodiment, instead of a single plate 10, two axially spaced plates each provided with a plurality of apertures form the restricted outlet for the chamber 8, the apertures in one plate being offset with respect to the apertures in the other plate. To aid in uniform heating and mixing of the combustion gases and the air stream, the air ducts 7 are provided with apertures 13 in their forwardly directed surfaces, and an outwardly directed peripherally extending flange 12 is provided adjacent the outlet end of the combustion chamber to prevent interference between the hot gases issuing from the combustion chamber and the stream of air blown past the same.
