Abstract
1,166,288. Fibrous compositions. OWENSILLINOIS Inc. 25 Nov., 1966 [26 Nov., 1965], No. 52856/66. Heading C3N. [Also in Division D2] A shaped body containing at least a major amount of cellulosic pulp fibres is made by forming an aqueous slurry containing at least 2% of cellulosic pulp fibres, adding a compound of Ti, Zr, V or Sn which hydrolyses during the process, agitating the mixture to deposit the finely divided hydrolysis product on the surface of the pulp fibres, removing at least a major proportion of the aqueous medium and forming a shaped pulp body, applying a solution or emulsion of an organic thermoplastic polymer and bonding the polymer to the pulp body. Specified polymers are low mol. wt. oxidized polyethylene wax, superpolyamide nylon, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyvinyl alcohol and gelatine. Potassium oleate may be present as emulsifier. Specified hydrolysable metallic compounds are Zr or V alkyls with 1-8 carbon atoms, stannous and stannic halides and stannous salts of monocarboxylic acids having up to 18 carbon atoms. Hardwood, softwood, alpha-cellulose and ground wood are suitable as fibres. A laminated glass-paper article may be produced by including in the pulp a minor proportion of finely divided glass as fibres, flakes or chips, preferably less than 20%. After applying the polymer, the shaped body is dried, preferably at 250-260‹ F. and 150 1b. p.s.i. pressure.
