Abstract

1,165,549. Grinding. UNIVIS Inc. 13 Dec., 1966 [12 Jan., 1966], No. 55808/66. Heading B3D. [Also in Division G2] A bifocal lens blank 20 (Division G2) is provided with referencing means at its peripheral edge for indicating the position of the reading portion of the blank. The lens blank is first aligned with a target (Fig. 14, not shown) and clamped in position. The periphery of the lens blank is then milled to produce two reference flats by grinding wheels 80, 82 which are adapted to move along slides 84, 86 respectively. The distances of the reference flats from the centre of the blank are adjusted by moving the slides 84, 86 towards and away from the lens blank 20. The finished blank is then mounted on a block 94 (Fig. 17), the reference flats being arranged to abut against adjustable stops. A second lens block 92 is positioned on the lens blank and accurately aligned with the block 94 by means of a gimbal arrangement 110. A rotatable dial 132 carries two pins 136, 138 arranged to engage recesses 140, 142 provided in the block 92. The dial is rotated until the line joining the two pins is parallel with the cylinder axis of the lens blank 20. The block 92 is then secured to the lens blank with a lowmelting point alloy 150 which is poured in molten state into a recess between the block 92 and the lens blank. The blank is thus accurately mounted on the block 92 for shaping the free surface to the required configuration.
