Abstract

The tension of a strip being continuously rolled is regulated between successive stands by hydraulically operated looper arms 17. The force exerted by the arms decreases progressively as the strip is rolled between subsequent stands. A common accumulator 1 supplies all the looper cylinders 2 through a pressure main 3, the accumulator being supplied with hydraulic fluid from a pump 6, and with nitrogen from cylinders 15. In the operating position of each arm 17, as shown, the differential area of the piston 20 produces a force urging the arm upwardly. By varying the differential areas of subsequent pistons (by changing the piston rod diameters) the ratio of forces produced by the arms is determined. The position of the arms 17 can be used to control the pressure in the accumulator. Operation of solenoids 18 or 19 causes lowering or raising of each arm during, for example, a strip threading operation.
