Abstract

1,165,399. Benzene. GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. 22 Nov., 1967 [22 Nov., 1966], No. 53252/67. Heading C5E. An alkylbenzene feedstock, particularly toluene, is hydrodealkylated at 538-982‹ C. in a primary reaction zone; an effluent comprising hydrogen, unreacted alkylbenzene, benzene and polyphenyls is recovered and separated, e.g. by fractionation; the polyphonyls are hydrocracked at 482-816‹ C. in an auxiliary reaction zone optionally containing a catalyst, e.g. natural clay, alumina, silica/alumina or sulphided nickel; and benzene is recovered from the effluent from both zones. The process is operated continuously, and the two effluents may be combined before the separation stage. Before the separation the combined effluents may be selectively hydrogenated to remove unsaturated aliphatic contaminants. The primary reaction zone may comprise two vessels, the effluent from the first being cooled before entering the second. Suitable operating conditions are given, and a detailed flow-sheet shows inter alia recycling, quenching and heatexchange arrangements.
