Abstract

1,165,123. Foamed, open-celled plant growth media. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 4 Jan., 1968, No. 697/68. Headings C3B, C3C, C3P and C3R. [Also in Division C1] A plant growth medium is produced by foaming and curing a synthetic resin in admixture with 2-60% (based on resin) of water insoluble nutrient mixture containing Ca, P, S, K and Mg and 0À3-7À8% (based on resin and calculated as N) of an N nutrient, at least a portion of which is present as nitrate on an ion exchange resin, the amount of the nutrient mixture being not greater than 65% of that of the resin. Examples for production of polyurethane, epoxy resin, polyvinyl chloride and styrene-butadiene rubber open-celled foams are given: (A) a mixture of diepoxide resin, glycerine-propylene oxide polymer, polyglycol, silicone, BF 3 -triethylene glycol, trichlorofluoromethane. CaSO 4 , Ca 3 (P0 4 ) 2 , MgO, Mg 3 (P0 4 ) 2 , limestone, rock phosphate, and other plant nutrients is foamed; (B) a mixture of a styrene-butadiene rubber, carbon black, dioctyl phthalate, ammonium carbonate-as blowing agent, S, ZnO, mercaptobenzothiazole, stearic acid and plant nutrients is vulcanized to form a foam; (5) a mixture of an epoxy resin, 1,2,3 - tris - (2 - (2,3 - epoxy) - 2 - methylethoxy)- propane, polyepichlorohydrin diglycidyl ether, BF 3 /triethylene glycol complex and plant nutrients is foamed; and (7) a mixture of polyvinyl chloride, diisoctylphthalate, dipropylene glycol dibenzoate, dibasic lead phthalate, 1,1<SP>1-</SP> azobis(formamide)-as blowing agent and plant nutrients is heated to produce a foam.
