Abstract
1,164,921. Electrostatically treated filaments. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 9 May, 1967 [31 May, 1966], No. 21519/67. Heading B5B. [Also in Division D1] A number of synthetic polymer filaments travelling as a group (e.g. a bundle or tow) in which the filaments are substantially untwisted and unentangled with one another are triboelectrically charged by rubbing contact with a solid surface, an alkali metal salt having been incorporated in the filaments prior to the rubbing contact in a proportion of at least 0À02 gram atom (preferably at least 0À1 gram atom) of alkali metal component of the alkali metal salt per 100 lbs. of filament. The filaments are preferably polyester filaments and the alkali metal is preferably sodium, most preferably incorporated in the filaments in the form of sodium acetate. The filaments travelling as a group may be under tension while they are being triboelectrically charged and may subsequently be forwarded by means of a jet device towards a web laydown zone, the tension on the filaments being released at the exit of the jet device thereby permitting them to separate due to the repelling effect of the applied electrostatic charge, the filaments while thus separated being collected as a non-woven web. The filaments may be stretched prior to entering the jet device. The filaments may be charged by corona charging in addition to triboelectric charging prior to entry into the jet device. When the alkali metal incorporated in the polymer is in the form of the acetate, it may be added to the polymer precursors prior to polymerization or blended with the polymer prior to the polymer being spun.
