Abstract

1,164,447. Pipe joints; joint making packing. CLAM Ltd. 6 Oct., 1966 [13 Oct., 1965; 8 March, 1966], No. 43389/65. Headings F2B and F2G. A hard metallic sealing member 45, e.g. of stainless steel, consists of a hollow, elongate, open ended cylindrical portion at each end of which and on the outer surface thereof are formed annular beads shaped to provide sharp, peripherally continuous edges 45a, 45b, the axial length of the member being greater than one third of the overall diameter of the member, and the diameter of the annulus formed by the sharp edges being at least as great as the mean external diameter of the cylindrical portion. As shown, the sealing member is disposed between the abutment surfaces of tubular members 41, 42; an annular element 46 having an internal, coarse-pitch left-handed thread is screwed on to the member 42 and coacts with a sleeve 47 screwed on to the member 41 whereby the surfaces 42a, 44 are urged towards one another so that the edges 45a, 45b score shallow annular grooves in the surfaces 42a, 44. The sealing member when subjected to axial compression tends to be resiliently deformed within the elastic limit thereof and subjected to a reduction in axial length which is limited to a predetermined degree. The sealing member is of a material harder than that of the surfaces 42a, 44 in the ratio of at least 1À3:1. In a modification, the sealing member is positioned and held by a spring washer or circlip within a sleeve screwed into an apertured component and having a pipe clamped thereto by a locknut.
