Abstract
1,164,081. Lifting magnets. L. FRITZ. 16 Feb., 1968 [21 Feb., 1967], No. 7662/68. Heading H1P. In a lifting electromagnet a part of the energizing coil which does not magnetically bridge the poles of the magnetic circuit is made of ferromagnetic material. As shown, Fig. 3, a section 18 of the coil of a pot-type magnet is wound from an insulated ferromagnetic conductor to increase the effective size of the polepiece 15. The remaining section 19 of the coil is wound from insulated copper or aluminium wire. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the ferromagnetic winding is arranged on three sides of the cross-section of the winding adjacent to the magnetic circuit members. The ferromagnetic winding may comprise an uninsulated strip of steel interleaved with a strip of anodized aluminium to insulate the turns from one another, Fig. 6 (not shown). The aluminium strip may be connected in parallel with the steel strip to increase the conductance of the winding. The ferromagnetic coil section may act as a choke in a protection system, Fig. 7 (not shown). The two sections of the coil are connected, over insulating switches (37, 38), in parallel to a power supply, and a varistor (36) is connected in parallel with the ferromagnetic coil section (35). The magnet is deenergized by opening the supply to the ferromagnetic coil section before that to the non- ferromagnetic coil section so that voltage surges due to the inductance of the windings is dissipated in the varistor. The invention may also be applied to horseshoetype magnets Fig. 5 (not shown).
