Abstract

1,163,495. Cathode-ray tubes. COMPAGNIE DE SAINT-GOBAIN. 23 June, 1967 [23 June, 1966], No. 29050/67. Heading H1D. A mask 2 in a cathode-ray tube, especially the shadow mask of a colour television tube, which comprises a perforated non-magnetic metal sheet, is attached directly to the glass of the envelope 1 by tabs 5 cut out along the edges of the mask, the tabs being sealed in the glass of the envelope. Preferably the tabs are secured in the seal between the face-plate and the cone of the envelope. The mask may be held at the required tension by rollers during the sealing operation. If the mask is made of material having a greater expansion coefficient than the glass then the assembled face-plate, mask and cone as a whole may be heated in a furnace to an appropriate temperature, e.g. 420-450‹ C. for a vitro-crystalline sealing substance, whereupon the necessary tension in the mask will be produced when it is cooled. If, however, the seal is effected by a cement or cold seal the mask alone may be heated before the actual sealing takes place. The tube face-plate may be flat. Examples of the material of the mask and the dimensions of tube 5 and cutouts 4 are given.
