Abstract
1,163,222. Razors. GILLETTE INDUSTRIES Ltd. 12 June, 1968 [19 June, 1967], No. 28155/67. Heading B4B. A disposable safety razor head in which the blade is permanently secured in moulded plastics material shaped to leave the cutting edge of the blade exposed and to form a guard in front of the cutting edge and a cap behind the cutting edge is characterized in that the blade is of the kind having two opposite edges sharpened, the plastics material applied to each face of the blade is shaped to form a guard for one of the cutting edges and a cap for the other cutting edge, and the head is adapted to be detachably and reversibly secured to a handle, with one cutting edge only of the blade accessible for use in each position of attachment. In one form, the head comprises two identical mouldings 1, Fig. 1, disposed respectively above and below a conventional double-edged safety razor blade 2. Each moulding is shaped along one edge 11 to provide a guard for one of the cutting edges of the blade and is shaped along the opposite edge 12 to provide a cap for the other cutting edge. One face of each moulding is formed with projections 13 and recesses 14, and the opposite face is formed with a groove 15 adapted to make locking engagement with a projection 31 on the upper edge of a handle 3. When the parts are assembled, only one of the cutting edges 21 is accessible for use. When this edge has become too blunt for further use, the head can be disengaged from the handle, reversed in position and re-engaged with the handle, using the second groove 15, so that the other cutting edge is accessible for use. In a modification, the head comprises two identical mouldings 16, Fig. 4, which are secured together with a doubleedged blade 2 between them. Each moulding is formed with a T-shaped aperture 17, the longer portions of the two apertures being in register with one another and with the central slot in the blade 2. The handle comprises two plastics mouldings 32, 33 which are secured together around a locking device which comprises a sheet metal body 34, two levers 35 pivotally connected at 36, Figs. 6 and 7, to the body 34 and an operating member 37 slidable in the body 34. Projections 37a, 37b on the member 37 engage between the levers 35 so that when the member 37 is moved down (Fig. 7), projection 37b turns the levers to bring their upper ends together, and when the member 37 is moved up (Fig. 6) projection 37a moves the upper ends of the levers apart. When an assembled head is placed on top of the locking device (when in the Fig. 7 position), the projecting ends of the levers 35 enter the apertures 17, the end surfaces of which diverge inwardly. At the same time, a tongue 38, Fig. 4, enters the shorter portion of the aperture 17 in the lower member 16. Slide 37 is then moved to the Fig. 6 position, thus locking the head in position. In another modification, the blade is Z- shaped and is secured between two identical mouldings. The handle has at one end a hooklike projection which presents internally a surface against which one face of the disposable head can be engaged and clamped. Slidably mounted in the handle under the control of a spring is a jaw adapted to engage the opposite face of the head and secure it against the clamping surface provided by the hood. In a further modification, the mouldings have their end faces formed with aligned holes for rotatably receiving pins carried by a pair of jaws forming part of the handle. By moving the handle stem longitudinally, the jaws can be moved apart to withdraw the pins and allow the head to be changed.
