Abstract

1,163,086. Polyamides. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 15 Feb., 1967 [7 March, 1966; 28 Oct., 1966], Nos. 9763/66 and 48486/66. Heading C3R. Polyamides (especially polyhexamethylene adipamide) are stabilized by the addition of a sterically hindered phenol which is stable in the polymer when molten and a phosphorus compound which has the general formula R is a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aryl radical, and X is an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aryl or araliphatic radical or when (I) is an acid, a salt or ester thereof. Suitable compounds are: phosphonous acids, its salts and esters. Suitable phenols are; 1,1,3 - tris - (2<SP>1</SP> - methyl, - 4<SP>1</SP>- hydroxy - 5 - tert. - butylphenyl) butane and 1,1,5,5-tetrakis- (21 - methyl - 4<SP>1</SP> - hydroxy - 5 - tert. - butylphenyl) pentane. The phenol may be used at 0-01-10% by wt. of the polyamide and the phosphorus compound at 0.01-2% by wt. of the polyamide. The composition may also contain TiO 2 and a manganese compound. The phenol and phosphorus compound may be coated on to a solid polyamide which is then melted and may be spun into fibres. Alternatively the phenol and phosphorus compound may be added to polyamide forming compound either before or during polymerization.
